Chilean Pod Weed

Chilean Pod Weed

Chilean Pod Weed, scientifically known as Eccremocarpus scaber, is a vigorous perennial vine native to the Chilean Andes. It is commonly grown as an ornamental plant due to its attractive flowers but has become an invasive species in various parts of the world, including Australia. The plant features numerous branched vines that can grow up to 3 meters long, with woody bases and alternate, pinnately compound leaves. The leaves are bright green, with tendrils that help the plant climb. It produces vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that can be orange, red, or pink, appearing in clusters.

Methods of Control

Physical Removal:

  • Hand-pulling: Effective for young plants and small infestations. Ensure complete removal of roots and stems to prevent regrowth.
  • Mechanical Removal: Use tools to cut and remove vines. Regular cutting can reduce the plant's vigor and prevent seeding.

Chemical Control:

  • Glyphosate: Apply as a foliar spray during the plant's active growth phase. Ensure thorough coverage of all foliage.
  • Selective Herbicides: Herbicides targeting broadleaf plants can be used, following specific guidelines for application rates and timing.

Cultural Control:

  • Avoid planting Chilean Pod Weed in gardens, particularly near natural areas.
Implement regular monitoring and removal to prevent establishment and spread.
